Gnosis (maʿrifa)irfan

In Sufism, maʿrifa is knowledge lived with the heart rather than read from a book. The difference between hearing a truth and knowing it from within is the domain of maʿrifa. As a bodily and heartfelt knowing, gnosis goes beyond intellectual knowledge. The concept can be read as the spiritual counterpart of the bodily knowing found in somatic work.
