Spiritual state (ḥāl)

In Sufism, a ḥāl is a transient state that arises on the spiritual journey. States such as ecstasy or wonder are seen as a gift that descends of itself, which a person cannot produce by technique. The passing nature of the ḥāl distinguishes it from a lasting station. The traveler is counseled to continue on the path without being swept away by the state.
