The Body Mirror is a self-assessment of how much you notice your body’s inner signals (interoceptive awareness) and how you relate to them. It draws on the multidimensional interoceptive-awareness framework and measures eight dimensions: noticing, not-distracting, not-worrying, attention regulation, emotional awareness, self-regulation, body listening and trusting.
What is body awareness?
The Body Mirror is a self-assessment of how much you notice your body’s inner signals (interoceptive awareness) and how you relate to them. It draws on the multidimensional interoceptive-awareness framework and measures eight dimensions: noticing, not-distracting, not-worrying, attention regulation, emotional awareness, self-regulation, body listening and trusting.
Interoceptive awareness is your capacity to sense your heartbeat, breath, tension and inner sensations. This capacity underlies recognizing emotions, calming yourself and making intuitive decisions. Strong body awareness is linked to both emotional balance and well-being.
How to read the result
Each dimension yields a 0–6 average and falls into three bands: strength, balanced, area to work on. Here a high score means a stronger relationship with the body in that dimension. The dimensions feed each other: as “attention regulation” grows, for instance, “self-regulation” gets easier.
Link to somatic therapy
Somatic approaches hold that healing happens not only through thought but through the body. Body awareness is both the entry point and the measure of this work. If you struggle in one or two dimensions, small body-based practices (breath, body scan) strengthen it; if you feel a widespread disconnection, working with a somatic therapist or coach makes a deep difference.
The eight dimensions measured
| Dimension | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Noticing | Noticing body sensations. |
| Not-Distracting | Staying with discomfort. |
| Not-Worrying | Not worrying over discomfort. |
| Attention Regulation | Directing attention to the body. |
| Emotional Awareness | Noticing the emotion–body link. |
| Self-Regulation | Calming via the body. |
| Body Listening | Listening to the body. |
| Trusting | Feeling the body as safe. |
FAQ
- Is a low score a problem?
- No. Body awareness is a learnable skill. A low score only shows the muscle is untrained; it strengthens with small practices like breathing and body scans.
