Annihilation (fanā)

In Sufism, fanā is the melting away of the boundaries of the ego, the ending of a person's identification with themselves. The 'I' that the self places at the center dissolves. This is less an annihilation than the letting go of the claim to be a separate being. Fanā is described as one of the thresholds of the Sufi journey.
