The spirit (rūḥ)

In Sufism, the rūḥ is the divine breath breathed into every living soul, pure and not dispersed by death. Unlike the nafs, it is bound directly to the Divine and longs to return to its origin. Though the body dies, this bond of the rūḥ is not severed. The concept says that a human being is not merely a bodily being.
