Transmitting the unwritten rules

Transmitting the unwritten rules is the teaching of the unwritten codes of a setting. Every institution and every field has an invisible set of rules: how to behave, how to speak with whom, what may and may not be said. These rules are written in no document, yet knowing them often determines success. By passing on these unwritten codes to the mentee, the mentor offers them an invisible map. Rules not shown by an insider are often learned only through bitter experience.
