Apprenticeship is learning a craft alongside it, by doing and by watching the master. This is an ancient form of learning; the apprentice stands beside the master, sees how they work, and over time takes over the work. Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger's theory of 'situated learning' shows that learning often happens by participating in the practice of a community. The knowledge passed on this way is often the tacit knowledge that cannot be learned from books. Beside the master, the apprentice acquires not only technique but the spirit of a craft.
