Mental filtering
Mental filtering is seeing only the negative side of a situation and letting its positive sides slip through the sieve. When a person receives ten positive pieces of feedback and one criticism, in the evening they think only of that single criticism. The mind locks onto the negative detail and dims the rest of the picture. This pattern shows reality as incomplete and distorted. The coach helps the client bring back the whole picture by also making visible the positive data they have overlooked.
