The living body (Leib)Leib

The living body is a philosophical concept that describes the body as subjectively experienced. In the phenomenological tradition, the German word 'Leib' distinguishes the body lived from within from the objective body (Körper) that is measured and examined. The living body is not an object but a living subjectivity through which contact is made with the world. This distinction explains why somatic philosophy regards the body as a subject. The body lived from within is a different reality from the body looked at from outside.
