Status quo bias

Status quo bias is people's tendency to maintain the current situation even when there are better options. Change carries an effort and an uncertainty, whereas the current situation is familiar and predictable; this is why a person often prefers not to decide, that is, to stay where they are. This tendency is closely linked to loss aversion and makes inaction look like a comfortable option. Yet doing nothing is in fact also a choice, and it too has a consequence. The coach helps the client see that not changing also has a cost, and make their choice consciously.
