The sandwich method

The sandwich method places criticism between two positive statements: first appreciation, then an area for growth, then a positive note again. It is a widespread technique, but it also has a criticized side; once the pattern is obvious, the opening praise loses its sincerity and the other person waits, thinking "now the bad news is coming." Used well, it softens the blow; used badly, it hides the real message. It does not always fit with Cevvela's preference for directness. What matters is not applying the pattern but staying both clear and compassionate.
