The precontemplation stage
The precontemplation stage is the phase in which a person does not yet see a problem or a need for change. A person at this stage does not resist changing, because they do not think there is anything to change. Pressure from outside generally increases their defenses and closes the door. Here the coach does not try to persuade; with non-judgmental questions they open space for the client's own awareness to emerge. Noticing itself is often the first step of change.
