The anthropologist Victor Turner calls moments of transition liminality. This interval, where the old state no longer holds and the new one is not yet established, is uncertain and fragile. Ritual passages, mourning, moving house, or a change of profession are all lived on this threshold. Inner work often unfolds right here, in the space between the two.
