Heidegger's concept of being-in-the-world says that a human being is not a subject cut off from the world. Before any subject-object division, we are already within a world, in a web of relations and meanings. When a tool comes to hand we do not examine it but use it directly; our relation to the world is practical from the start. The concept shows that taking ourselves to be an isolated mind is a late abstraction.
