The Johari window
The Johari window is a model of awareness that shows how open a person is to themselves and to others. It was developed by Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham; the name comes from the combination of their first names. The model consists of four areas: the open area that both oneself and others know, the blind area that only others see, the hidden area that a person conceals, and the unknown area that no one yet knows. Growth often happens through the shrinking of the blind area, that is, the becoming visible of what others see but the person does not. Coaching helps to widen this open area through feedback and self-disclosure.
