Confidentiality is that everything the client shares is under protection. It is the precondition of trust; a person does not open up without being sure they will be heard in confidence. The ICF ethical code defines confidentiality as a mandatory boundary of the profession. Exceptions, for example the risk of harm to oneself or another, are spoken of from the start and openly. The protected space is the ground of deep work.
