Managing power asymmetry

Managing power asymmetry is the fair use of the difference in seniority and position between mentor and mentee. Mentoring is by nature an unequal relationship; the mentor is often in the more powerful position. Using this power for the mentee's benefit — and not misusing it to overpower or steer them — is the mentor's ethical responsibility. Aware of this difference, the mentor makes room for the mentee. A power used fairly does not cow the mentee but lifts them up.
