Intrinsic motivation
Intrinsic motivation is doing a task not for a reward that comes from outside but for the satisfaction it brings in itself. A person who does something because they are curious about it, find it meaningful, or enjoy doing it acts from this motive. The research of Edward Deci and Richard Ryan shows that intrinsic motivation is more sustainable and more satisfying than extrinsic motivation. This is why coaching often turns less to the question 'what will you gain?' than to 'why does this feel meaningful to you?'. A wish that comes from within stays in place even when supervision is removed.
