Self-determination theory
Self-determination theory is a framework holding that a person's lasting motivation rests on three basic psychological needs. It was developed by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan. These needs are autonomy, competence, and relatedness; when one of them is not met, motivation and well-being weaken. The theory sees a human being not as pushed from outside but as inclined, when the right conditions are provided, to develop of their own accord. Coaching therefore looks at how far these three needs are met in the client's life.
