Merleau-Ponty says that bodies understand one another first not through the mind but directly through the body. Another's gesture finds an echo in our own body before we interpret it; yawns are catching, tension passes between us. Intercorporeality is the ontology of touch and mutual sensing. It shows that a human being is not a solitary subject but, from the outset, a relational body.
