The flesh (la chair)la chair

The late Merleau-Ponty speaks of an older fabric beneath the division between subject and object, and calls it la chair, the flesh. The flesh is the fact that the seer and the seen, the toucher and the touched, are cut from the same cloth. When we touch one hand with the other we both touch and are touched; this two-sidedness is the mark of the flesh. The concept says that the body is not a capsule cut off from the world but is made of the same stuff as the world.
