Horizontal development

Horizontal development is a person gaining new knowledge and skills within their current level of understanding. Learning a piece of software, acquiring a language, or adding a new method is growth of this kind; capacity widens but the way of looking at the world stays the same. Most education and development proceed along this axis, and it is genuinely valuable. Even so, some blockages are undone not by a new skill but only when the way of looking itself changes. The coach distinguishes which kind of development is needed; not every problem is overcome with new knowledge.
