Emmanuel Levinas thinks the encounter with another human being through the face. The face is an irreducible otherness that cannot be measured or placed into categories, and it carries a silent appeal. This appeal gives rise to a responsibility even before I will it. For Levinas, ethics begins in this encounter, prior to any theory.
