I-Thou and I-It

Martin Buber distinguishes two basic modes of relation. In the I-It relation the other is used like an object, reduced to a function. In the I-Thou relation the other is met as a whole being, in mutuality. With the same person we move back and forth between the two modes across a day; Buber says that genuine encounter happens in the I-Thou.
