Expectancy-value theory

Expectancy-value theory says that motivation is born of the combination of two things: the expectation of succeeding and the value that success carries. Its logic is multiplicative; when either of the two approaches zero, motivation drops too. If a person does not believe they can achieve something, they will not act, however valuable it may be; and even if they believe they can achieve it, they will not strive for a goal they do not care about. The coach probes these two dimensions separately: 'Do you believe you can achieve this?' and 'Does this really matter to you?'. When both questions receive a yes, movement is born.
