Contracting is the clarifying, at the start of the coaching relationship, of expectations, the frame, and mutual responsibilities. This covers both practical matters, for instance duration, frequency, and confidentiality, and the aim of the process and how the work will be done. A clear contract prevents misunderstandings and disappointments that might arise later. When this step is skipped, the parties may proceed with different expectations and the relationship can be damaged. By setting a clear ground from the very start, the coach ensures the safe progress of the work that follows.
