The startle reflexstartle

The startle reflex is the body jumping or tensing in the face of a sudden and unexpected stimulus. A loud sound or an abrupt movement puts the body instantly into a protective stance; the shoulders rise, the muscles tense. This reflex provides quick protection against danger. The startle is one of the body's fastest defensive responses. A sudden jump is often a protective reflex of the body.
