Explicit knowledge is knowledge that can be described, written down, and easily transferred. The steps of a method or the rules of a field are of this kind. Unlike tacit knowledge, explicit knowledge can be shared through a document, an explanation, or a training. In mentoring, explicit knowledge is an important beginning, but it is not enough on its own; real mastery often lies in knowing when and how to use it. When passing on explicit knowledge, the mentor sets it within the context of their own experience.
