A code of ethics is the document that sets out in writing the principles of conduct the coaching profession must observe. Professional bodies such as the ICF publish a detailed ethical code covering matters like confidentiality, conflict of interest, professional boundaries, and honesty. These rules both protect the client and secure the credibility of the profession. The ethical code offers the coach a frame of reference in difficult or unclear situations. The coach acts by remaining faithful to these written principles alongside their own intuition.
