The brainstem
The brainstem is the oldest region of the brain, governing the basic functions of survival. Life-sustaining processes such as breathing, heartbeat, and wakefulness are regulated from here. The brainstem works constantly and quietly, beneath conscious control. Its somatic importance is that many basic arousal and protective responses begin at this deep level. This region is the part that holds the body's most basic rhythm of life.
