The ventral vagal branch
The ventral vagal branch is the arm of the vagus nerve associated with social bonding and safety. According to polyvagal theory, when this branch is active, a person feels safe, connected, and calm; they are open to making contact with others. This state is the ground not only of rest and repair but of healthy relating. Ventral vagal activity corresponds to the safest and most bond-capable state of the nervous system. Feeling safe is often related to this branch being in play.
