The HPA axis
The HPA axis is a hormonal system that regulates the body's stress response. This line of communication between the hypothalamus, the pituitary, and the adrenal glands governs the release of stress hormones such as cortisol when a threat is perceived. This system is functional in short-term dangers; but when it stays constantly active, it creates a load in the body. The HPA axis shows that stress is not merely a feeling but a measurable physiological process. The healthy working of this axis includes being able to return to balance after stress.
