The emotion-mood distinction
An emotion is sharp, tied to a particular event, and often already has a name. A mood, by contrast, is diffuse, ongoing, and its trigger is unclear. Anger is an emotion; a dissatisfaction lasting for weeks is a mood. Seeing this distinction keeps us from confusing a passing reaction with a settled state.
