With a single pen, Cemil Meriç executes an entire class of counterfeit intellectuals. He writes the sociology of a land that has become hostile to its own inner gem. “Isms are straitjackets put on our understanding,” he cries out. He condemns the intellectuals who betray Cevvela’s principle that “those who know should teach, and those who see the way should hold up a light” — who look down on their own people and have become parrots of the West. You realize, shaken, how the concepts you use and the Western ideologies you defend have in fact torn your own identity apart. Whoever is blind to their own truth drowns in someone else’s lie.
