Arnold Toynbee’s Tarih Bilinci offers a wide-ranging philosophical perspective on history and on the history of humankind. Arnold Toynbee’s Tarih Bilinci is extremely valuable for offering a philosophical and speculative view of history. His cyclical approach to historical events reflects his effort to grasp the general flow of history. Some critics, however, have argued that his cyclical understanding simplifies the complexity of historical events. To claim that history always proceeds through the same cycles may overlook the uniqueness of events and civilizations. My own reading is that Toynbee’s approach largely offers a creative thought experiment. It teaches us to evaluate history not merely as a chain of events within a given period, but from a broader perspective. Still, it is hard to say that this cyclical model holds for every civilization; history has unfolded differently across geographies, times and communities. Even so, the philosophical view Toynbee offers on the rise and fall of civilizations encourages us to consider historical events with greater depth. His understanding of history is also striking for the way it emphasizes the effect of human will and creative power on events. The idea that the creative, innovative responses of individuals and societies to today’s challenges can shape the future of civilizations is one of Toynbee’s important contributions. Tarih Bilinci expanded my thinking about history, especially about the challenges civilizations face and the creative answers they give. By emphasizing the role of creativity and innovation in historical processes, it also offers an important lesson in how we should approach the problems of the contemporary world. The book’s greatest strength is its account of the capacity of human will and creative intelligence to change the course of history. I do think, however, that his cyclical view of history does not hold in every case. Seeing history always as a cycle can make us miss the singularity and difference of events.
