Debord’s book is a doomsday scenario written decades before social media was invented. When Cevvela says that “being useful is not an image but a way of existing,” it declares war on exactly this spectacle. For according to Debord, no one lives anymore; everyone is busy showing others that they are living. Life has turned into a reflection on a screen. It turns your stomach to realize that the food you eat, the holiday you take and even the ideas you defend exist only to be part of that “spectacle,” and that your true inner gem evaporates in this falseness. Whoever becomes a spectator has already given up on their own life.
