Under the mask of a detective story, Eco actually questions the power of knowledge. Jorge, the blind librarian of the monastery, is the dogmatic system itself, which preserves its authority by hiding knowledge from the people. Cevvela’s objection to an order that normalizes injustice fits this text perfectly. Power is mortally afraid of people laughing and asking questions, because a person who laughs overcomes fear. You realize that behind the rules imposed on you as sacred stand cowardly authorities trying to protect their own power. Do not fear the darkness that hides the truth; fear the light that sells you its own lie as truth.
