To mistake this for a children’s book is to fall into the trap of the Smoke Men. Ende exposes capitalism’s lie that “time is money.” While modern people think they are saving time, they are actually selling their lives, their loved ones, and the essence within them for a vast nothingness. Cevvela says, “Being useful is not about image—it is about existence”; yet the book shows us how those adults who are constantly rushing around and think they’re accomplishing something are actually letting their very existence go up in smoke. You’ll realize that your career plans and those never-ending meetings are actually the “smoke men” stealing your time. When you turn time into a commodity—not just to be lived, but to be spent—your soul dies.
