Le Guin shatters the "identity" constructs we place so much trust in with a sledgehammer. If gender—that most fundamental distinction—did not exist, what would humanity be like? As Cevvela listens to a person without judging them, Le Guin shows us how defining a person solely by their gender, nationality, or role prevents us from seeing their true essence. You realize that all those rigid prejudices and polarizations you hold are actually artificial constructs, and you feel a chill in that state of mental nakedness. If you cannot love the person in front of you without forcing them into a mold, then you have never truly seen them at all.
