With history’s first modern novel, Cervantes celebrates the stubborn will of the human being. Don Quixote is not mad; he is the only character who, in a self-serving and rotten world that has lost its ideals, stubbornly chooses to live his own honorable truth. When Cevvela speaks to those left half-finished because no one believed in them, it points to the magnificent faith with which Don Quixote charges the windmills. Though the world laughs at him, he does not give up the knightly gem within him. You realize how cowardly and shallow your own “realistic” and “rational” life really is, and you kneel before that madman’s nobility. A person who believes in their own truth has no need of the world’s lies.
