The Nadsat slang Burgess invented disrupts the reader’s comfort from the very first page. The text is a sickening dance between pure evil and pure authority. It shows how a leader — or a state — can turn its members into “clockwork oranges,” wind-up toys. The author’s philosophical position is clear: goodness from which the right to choose has been taken away is even more contemptible than evil itself. Cevvela wants you to awaken the gem within you through your own will, not through coercion from outside. You startle as you realize that the fake “compliance” and “ethics” trainings imposed on you at the office or in institutions are in fact an effort to turn you into a will-less machine.
