Márquez wrote not just about a murder, but about how a society moves within an organized hypocrisy. The killers may be the Vicario brothers, but the real murderer is the town itself — silent, telling itself “someone will surely stop it,” or hiding behind the sophistry of honor. It is the most striking example of Cevvela’s objection to an order that normalizes injustice. You realize how you have stood by as a spectator to the injustices happening before your eyes, just so your comfort would not be disturbed — and that the blood is on your hands too. Silence is the most powerful form of complicity.
