The Body Keeps the Score
CevvelaThe Body Keeps the Score
Bessel van der Kolk · Nobel Yaşam · 2014
Summary
A revolutionary work of psychiatry showing that trauma is not merely a memory that stays in the mind but directly changes the architecture of the brain and the nervous system — the body. It highlights the limits of talk therapy and describes somatic (bodily) methods of healing.
Quotes from Cevvela
“Trauma is not only an event that happened in the past; it is energy trapped in the body right now.”
“The brain may forget, but the body always remembers — and sends the bill.”
“Talking is never enough to release the bodily freeze that trauma leaves behind.”
“Healing requires being able to inhabit the body again with a sense of safety.”
“People who have been traumatized are often afraid not of danger but of their own bodies’ reactions.”

Van der Kolk lifts psychology out of the comfortable therapy armchair and places it at the center of the suffering body. It is the scientific constitution of somatic therapy. You may think you have forgotten the past and overcome those traumas; the body does not lie. The moments when you cannot swallow, panic attacks, chronic pain — all of these are the cry of an unprocessed inner gem trapped in the body. You realize with horror how the dark past you thought you had covered up so “rationally” has rewritten your biology. Any therapy that claims to heal the soul without involving the body is just expensive mental chatter.
