By simplifying the language, Orwell multiplies the savagery of the message. He shows, step by step, how leaders who set out with virtuous intentions are corrupted by the allure of power once they seize it. The pigs secretly rewriting the rules is exactly the insidious mobbing of today’s institutions and the injustice dressed up in lies about “unity and solidarity.” The sentence “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” sums up modern cronyism. You are disgusted when you recognize your own managers — or yourself — among those pigs. Power is the most merciless touchstone for testing the morality of whoever holds it.
