Paine is a fearless Enlightenment thinker who takes on dogma head-on. He proclaims that authority is not limited to the state but is often embodied in institutions that wear the mask of sanctity. Cevvela rallies those who remain silent because they have not been convinced; Paine, however, tells them: “Have the courage to use your own mind.” The book proves that delegating the responsibility of thinking to others is spiritual suicide. As you read, you realize that those taboos—which we’ve been taught since childhood to regard as unquestionable—are actually prisons designed to enslave your mind. Reason is the only force capable of breaking those chains.
