The Silent Ones and a Country That Still Has a Heart

How should I begin this piece?

The angry words in my mind are at war with one another; they just won’t settle down. As my thoughts fan the flames in my chest, they turn into a pain that wraps itself around my heart. My heart feels constricted, like a volcano ready to erupt. On my lips, sharp words dancing aimlessly are like knives. How can I express this deep pain, this indescribable injustice? What word could possibly describe this tragedy? Every sentence I try to put down on paper shatters in my hands. But I have to start somewhere—somewhere that will shatter this silence, dispel this darkness.

…

What does it mean to kill a child?

It means adding yet another of the darkest stains to the history of humanity. But what difference does it make—whether it happens somewhere else or right here? To kill a child is to bury hopes in the ground, to condemn the future to darkness. To kill a child is to add yet another innocent silence to the silence of the voiceless. This wound, no matter when or where it was inflicted, bleeds us all, destroys us all. What does it mean to kill a child!

Cemeteries are filled with buried stories and silent hopes. Yet there is a place even quieter than cemeteries: the Hamuşans. This is the resting place of lives whose existence has become uncertain. The disappearance of a child marks the beginning of such silence; it is the burial of life’s most innocent aspect in darkness.

…

And yet, everything had begun with such innocent joy. Little hands built a world with their toys, and every corner of the house was filled with sweet laughter. They would run from room to room, creating the melody of life within the house. But when that door opened and the little body stepped outside, the warmth left behind remained only as a memory.

The door opened, and the little body stepped out into the big world. In that moment, the wind caressed their hair, and the sun smiled upon their face. The street was a playground of adventure waiting to be discovered. Their steps were light, but each step left a trail like a question mark. Although stepping outside the house seemed like a simple act of discovery, a slight unease settled in the mother’s heart. “He’ll be back soon,” she said, but deep down, a prayer arose in her heart for the child’s safe return. As the little hands gripped the doorknob for the last time, they were unaware of what they were leaving behind.

As the hours passed, the footsteps echoing in the street fell silent, and the sun gave way to darkness. Those waiting for the little one to return found it increasingly difficult to breathe; with every breath, they fell into a deep void. The silence inside the house was like a harbinger of fear, as deep as a grave.

Darkness fell, but for the mother and father waiting for the child to return, the night was just beginning. In the faint light of the streetlamps, they had turned into mere shadows. As they searched every street corner, every street, and every yard, the fear within them swelled in waves. The trembling in their hands was a sign that their hope was beginning to fade. With every step, their feet felt as heavy as rocks, deepening the anxiety in their hearts. As they thought about it, their faces grew pale, and their voices grew quiet. Every door they knocked on was part of that violent wave rising within them.

Time seemed to be sucking everything in like a whirlpool. Days followed one after another, but the wait never ended. Mornings turned into nights; seasons changed, but their hope never faded. As the calendar pages fell one by one, with each passing day, their hope grew a little fainter. The child’s room remained just as it had been—the toys, the little pillow… But now the room had turned into a garden of memories, far removed from life. The scent on the pillow had faded, but the child’s hope of returning remained as the last glimmer of light in the parents’ hearts.

…

And one day, the long-awaited news arrived. But this time, every ring of the phone echoed like the first spark of a deep crack within them, shattering the last crumbs of hope. The words coming from the other end struck their hearts like bullets. The moment they learned that tiny body was no longer alive, the world stopped. The deep void that opened before their eyes was like a black hole sucking in the entire universe. The words struck their souls and echoed, but nothing made sense anymore. Everything was buried in endless darkness; every sound had fallen silent.

When the mother took her daughter’s pillow into her hands, the last shred of hope in her heart vanished. The tears streaming onto the pillow flowed like a river, but the river’s waters could no longer reach her child. As the father wandered through the house, with every step it felt as though he were edging a little closer to a precipice. With every step, the world grew a little heavier, and his heart sank a little deeper. Nothing made sense anymore; the world had lost all its colors and was filled only with shades of gray and black. This pain would remain like a festering wound gnawing at their souls—one that would never heal.

And what of the child’s experiences? Perhaps somewhere he wanted to cry out for help; perhaps there was no sound, no light—only a fear that enveloped him, seeming as though it would never end…

Is it easy to live through these moments? Is it easy to live while thinking about them? To watch a room that was once filled with joy turn into a silent grave of memories… To feel that little bed lying empty, that indescribable void greeting you every morning when you step into the room… Waking up every morning, opening that room’s door with a small glimmer of comfort, only to be struck once again by that cold reality… Knowing that little pillow still carries that pure scent, but helplessly watching that scent fade a little more each day… With every beat of your heart, burning with longing for a lost soul, trying to keep the hope inside you alive… At night, wandering through the house like a ghost, clinging to the past that echoes in the silence… Is it easy to bear the weight of this agony every moment, every second? This is not merely a waiting game; it means melting away a little more from the inside out every day, fading away a little more… Perhaps nothing can ever make up for that emotional void left behind after the loss of a child.

…

The consciences of those who inflict this pain are as cold as stone. Snuffing out a child’s life is like setting a rose garden ablaze; it destroys not only the present but also the future. Their actions will remain as sins in the darkest corners of humanity.

Every year, thousands of children suddenly vanish. There may be various reasons behind these disappearances: running away from home, human trafficking, tragic accidents, or other heartbreaking events. But no matter the cause, every disappearance drags those left behind into a thorny field of indescribable uncertainty and helplessness. While parents try to keep their hopes alive with even the tiniest bit of news from their loved ones, this wait sometimes turns into a nightmare that lasts for years. From the moment a child goes missing, each passing day becomes even more difficult; the ache within them grows like dark clouds covering the sky. The disappearance of a child leaves an indelible mark on the life of that household; their lives are forever changed. Parents pray every day, every moment, for that innocent child to return safe and sound, trying to keep their hopes alive amid a wait filled with uncertainty. Unfortunately, some children fall victim to human trafficking or other sinister intentions.

Every missing child reflects a deep rot in the conscience of a society; every piece of tragic news is a reflection of a social trauma. These traumas are a force that simmers from within like a volcano and, when it erupts, levels everything in its path. A wound is torn open in the soul of society, and this wound remains unhealed for generations. This pain seeps into the very deepest corners of society; trust is shattered, and sincerity vanishes. Society can no longer embrace its children with confidence; each new day heralds a new fear.

Criminals must receive the punishments they deserve so that society’s sense of justice can be rebuilt. Punishments must be deterrent so that anyone contemplating a crime will immediately think twice. This heals society’s conscience and ensures the protection of the innocent. Justice is not merely a concept; it is the strongest armor safeguarding society’s peace and security. This armor must never be allowed to be breached.

Remaining silent in the face of this suffering is tantamount to trampling on human dignity. Every child who goes missing, every child who is killed, is a piece torn from the heart of society, a dagger plunged into the depths of its soul. Now is not the time to remain silent; it is time to take action. Those children are not just statistics, nor are they mere blog posts; they are souls, lives, futures, and hopes. And if we turn a deaf ear to their silence, we will have lost our own humanity. Those who create this darkness seek to plunge not just one child, but all of humanity into darkness. But we must tear through this darkness and ensure that the light shines once more. Because a society can only be a true society to the extent that it can protect its children and offer them a secure future.

Only those with a heart can build a world filled with love.

Only a country with a heart protects the innocent.

A country with a heart!
