Leadership
Before we begin to explain the concept of next-generation leadership, it would be appropriate to define the current or previous generation. The concept of next-generation leadership emerges as an evolution of past leadership approaches. We can think of past leadership approaches as a command-and-control style characterized by a stricter, top-down hierarchy and greater resistance to change. In the new generation, leadership will not be reinvented; it will build upon the past.
Leadership
The concept of leadership, which can be examined from different perspectives across various cultures, can be defined as the process of influencing others to collaborate toward a common goal.
During the literature review I conducted while beginning to write the article titled “New Generation Leadership,” the concepts I encountered most frequently were “change” and “transformation.”
Although the concepts of change and transformation are often perceived as similar, they differ in terms of their meanings, processes, and effects. Change refers to a narrower scope, while transformation denotes a broader scope and typically signifies a radical change. Change refers to the alteration of an element’s existing qualities, while transformation involves a fundamental shift in the essence of something, leading it to take on a new form. For example, change refers to short-term adjustments in a specific area, such as making work hours more flexible within a company, while transformation involves a fundamental and comprehensive shift, such as a company transitioning to a fully digital business model.
Similarly, when I examine books or texts written about leadership throughout history, the terms I encounter most frequently are: vision, collaboration, motivation, inspiration, delegation, empathy, charisma, strategy, development, and change.
Do the Concepts of Manager and Leader Mean the Same Thing?
While a person who holds a specific position within an organization, works toward specific goals, and has the authority and responsibility to utilize certain resources to achieve those goals can be defined as a manager, leadership can be defined as the process of gaining people’s trust through personal qualities, influencing them, inspiring them, and guiding them toward a common goal.
A manager operates within the existing system and works to maintain it; as an administrator, they focus on short-term calculations, adhere to a job description, and typically do not require a great deal of creativity, leadership, on the other hand, is a position that can operate beyond the existing order, is more creative, constantly seeks innovation, and thinks in terms of long-term goals.
The Transition from Traditional Leadership to Next-Generation Leadership
In my research on leadership, spanning from historical sources to the present day, the following works and expected characteristics emerged.
Here, we can list the most important leadership traits that stand out and remain constant as follows:
- Determination
- Empathy and interpersonal skills
- Strategic thinking
- Motivation and inspiration
New Generation Leadership
Unlike the old or traditional understanding of leadership, we can define new generation leadership as a mutual guidance or mentoring process where everyone contributes to leadership—the opposite of the hierarchical command-and-control structure we are familiar with.
The concept of “new generation leadership,” shaped around specific traits and values, can focus on the ability to adapt to and shape cultural, technological, and social changes in today’s world. Here are some key points on how we might define the concept of “new-generation leadership” today:
- Possesses digital skills and is tech-savvy
- Is adaptable and flexible, not resistant to change
- Thinks globally across diverse cultures
- Is socially responsible and has a commitment to sustainability
- Balanced between work and personal life, having adopted flexible work arrangements
- Highly innovative and creative.
All these points help us understand the characteristics of this generation and define the core features of the “new generation leadership” concept as of today. These also reflect how today’s new generation and young professionals approach global business, society, and technology.
Leadership in the Future
The following concepts may be important in understanding the transition from traditional leadership to today’s leadership, and how we might view future leadership from the perspective of today’s new generation of leadership.
In addition to the six characteristics of today’s new generation of leadership mentioned above, the following leadership traits will gain importance in the future:
- Competencies in Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence
- Emotional Intelligence and Empathy
In summary, leadership in the future will focus on the ability to adapt to cultural and societal changes and shape those changes. These leaders will aim to improve people’s lives and build a sustainable future by effectively utilizing technology.
Career Development and the Evolving Dynamics of the Business World with New-Generation Leadership Styles
New-generation leadership for the new generation of people who want to know everything but resist learning anything.
Significant changes are currently taking place in career matters with new-generation leadership. Current or traditional leadership and career models are gradually giving way to more sensitive, flexible, and collaborative approaches.
Leaders with this more inclusive and collaborative new style are increasing both the commitment and motivation of their teams working toward a common goal. The flexibility of new-generation leaders, which enables them to make quick and effective decisions in an evolving work environment, also fosters diversity among employees. The importance of professional networks is growing for building professional relationships, networking, discovering new opportunities, and personal development.
For example, “Agile” (a management approach in software development and project management), has become one of the widely accepted models for managing business processes and new-generation leadership across the business world in recent years. Agile leaders, by moving away from traditional hierarchical structures, encouraging their teams with a more collaborative, flexible, and responsive leadership style, trusting them, and providing the resources they need to achieve their goals through continuous development and learning—thereby helping organizations become more competitive and innovative.
For example, tech giants like Google have adopted leadership models that promote work-life balance by offering flexible work hours and remote work options.
Beyond all this, leaders of the future will possess a quality that fulfills people’s spirits by selflessly dedicating themselves. In other words, it will encompass not only material resources but also balance, the search for meaning, and personal fulfillment.
New-generation leadership skills—such as flexibility, mentoring, coaching, empathy, and feedback—will also help individuals advance in their careers, navigate their inner journeys, and foster their personal growth.
New-generation leaders, who will bring technology and people together to build a better future, will improve life in our world—which is in need of well-being and peace—by raising a new generation of individuals who can manage change, possess advanced empathy and communication skills, never cease to grow, respect the values of both themselves and everyone else, view things from different perspectives, and and by nurturing the next generation of individuals who consider social and environmental impacts, they will also improve life in our world, which is in need of well-being and peace.
