Not Mystical, but Biological The phrase “My intuition told me so” is sometimes met with a dismissive reaction: it’s unscientific, subjective, and unsubstantiated. But this assessment contradicts current research. Antonio Damasio’s somatic marker hypothesis ( Descartes’ Error , 1994) reveals the neurobiological basis of intuition. Past experiences leave bodily traces—changes in muscle tone, heart rate patterns, skin conductance, and visceral responses. When the brain encounters a similar situation, it processes these traces quickly and implicitly. The result: a feeling of “this is right” or “this is wrong” that arises before conscious analysis is complete. Isn’t that intuition? That is exactly what intuition is. Gerd Gigerenzen: The Value of Heuristics German psychologist Gerd Gigerenzen has spent decades researching intuition and heuristic (shortcut) decision-making ( Gut Feelings , 2007). One of his findings is that intuition is not always “irrational”—on the contrary, in the right context, it produces better results than systematic analysis. Gigerenzen’s “take the best” heuristic: When an expert makes a quick decision with limited information, they often arrive at a more accurate result than a systematic analysis that takes all information into account. This is because the expert’s brain has implicitly learned what each signal means. An important limitation: this advantage applies to fields where there is accumulated experience. In a new field, intuition is less reliable. Is the “Gut Feeling” Real? Isn’t the “gut feeling” just a metaphor? Research shows it is, quite literally, physical. Michael Gershon’s research on the enteric nervous system ( The Second Brain , 1998) shows that there are 100 million neurons in the intestinal wall—a real neural network that operates independently of the central nervous system. This system is in constant communication with the brain and influences both emotional and cognitive processes. The feeling of “my stomach churning” is a real physiological signal. And this signal contributes to decision-making processes. When Is It Reliable, When Is It Deceptive Blindly trusting intuition is just as flawed as rejecting every intuition. Research suggests the following distinction: Reliable intuition: There is accumulated experience in the relevant field, pattern recognition ability is high, and the decision is made in a low-uncertainty environment. Misleading intuition: the field is new and unfamiliar; the nervous system is under stress or fatigue (impairing implicit evaluation); the decision is colored by bias (coding the desired outcome as “intuition”). “Intuition is the bodily summary of past experiences.
