Why Has It Become So Popular?
In recent years, breathing exercises have been everywhere—from the Wim Hof Method to holotropic breathing, from coherent breathing to the 4-7-8 technique. There’s a real reason behind this interest—but without understanding the mechanism, the practice remains limited.
Why is breathing such a powerful tool? The answer is simple: breathing is one of the few mechanisms that allows for conscious intervention in the autonomic nervous system.
The Vagus Nerve and Breathing
Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory explains the anatomy of this connection (The Polyvagal Theory, 2011). The vagus nerve—the longest cranial nerve, extending from the brainstem to the abdominal cavity—serves as a two-way communication channel between the brain and the heart, lungs, and digestive system.
A critical finding: the majority of the vagus nerve is afferent—meaning it travels from the body to the brain. This means that the body’s state shapes the brain’s state. Breathing directly influences this communication pathway.
Slow, deep exhalation increases vagal activation → the parasympathetic system is activated → heart rate slows, cortisol decreases, and access to the prefrontal cortex is enhanced.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Performance
Heart rate variability (HRV)—the variability in the time interval between two consecutive heartbeats—is directly related to vagal tone. High HRV indicates that the parasympathetic system is active.
Research by Richard Brown and Patricia Gerbarg (The Healing Power of the Breath, 2012) shows that 5–6 breath cycles per minute (“coherent breathing”) significantly increase HRV. This increase is observed both acutely (during a session) and chronically (as a lasting effect from regular practice).
High HRV is associated with better emotional regulation, greater cognitive flexibility, and lower anxiety—a consistent finding across studies.
Why the Exhalation Rate Is Critical
An important nuance: it is exhalation—not inhalation—that is the key to parasympathetic activation.
During inhalation, heart rate increases slightly (sympathetic). It decreases during exhalation (parasympathetic). This is a normal physiological pattern known as “respiratory sinus arrhythmia.”
A long exhalation—holding it longer than the inhalation—enhances parasympathetic activation. The common feature of the 4-7-8 technique, boxing breath, and coherent breathing techniques is this: a relatively long exhalation.
Breathing and Attention Quality
Neuroscience research reveals an interesting connection between breathing rhythm and attention quality. A 2018 study by Jose Herrero and colleagues found that the nasal breathing rhythm synchronizes activation in the hippocampus and amygdala. This synchronization is functional for both memory consolidation and emotional processing.
Practical implication: A few minutes of mindful breathing before starting an important task does more than just “relax” you—it recalibrates your attention system.
