Summary

The first major work of history by Herodotus, considered the “father of history,” which focuses on the Greco-Persian Wars and recounts the traditions, myths, and political ambitions of the entire known world of that era. It stands as proof that humanity’s thirst for power and its arrogance have remained unchanged for centuries.

Cevvela Comment

Herodotus does not merely recount wars; he exposes the arrogant, greedy human nature behind those bloody conflicts. The clash between the East’s immense power and the West’s cunning conception of freedom is, in reality, a clash of the ambitions within humanity itself. Cevvela says that without knowledge of the past, that gem will never shine. The author shows us that the immense arrogance of kings will ultimately bring about divine retribution. You come to realize that today’s heads of state or leaders are no different from those greedy kings of thousands of years ago. Human nature is a fool that has been repeating the same tragedy for centuries in the face of history.

Reading threshold

Two reflection prompts to note while reading — you do not need to answer them.

  1. Is there a threshold in the text you recognize — do you want to cross it or pause?

  2. After finishing, which line or scene stayed with you — and why?
